Job Description

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is seeking an experienced and capable engineering leader to join the Amazon Rekognition team.

Amazon Rekognition (https://aws.amazon.com/rekognition/) is a new AWS service that launched in Nov 2016 which provides deep learning-based image recognition. It is a service that makes it easy to add image analysis to applications. With Rekognition, customers can detect objects, scenes, and faces in images. They can also search and compare faces. Rekognition’s API enables to quickly add sophisticated deep learning-based visual search and image classification to applications.

Behind the facade of this AI capability is the work of a smart and motivated team owning the full service stack and solving challenging problems around data acquisition, quality, scaling, efficiency, and reliability to ensure our customers get great results from their data. Equally critical and challenging is the science behind Rekognition that uses deep neural network models to detect and label thousands of objects and scenes in images. We are constantly adding new capabilities to the service, meaning what is launched is just the tip of the iceberg. The goal is to be the bleeding edge of a highly scalable technology that can analyze billions of images daily and provide rich analytics.

We have an ambitious charter and the resources to support that. You’ll solve challenging technical problems, often the ones others have not solved before, with peers who have industry leading technical abilities. Your solutions will be rolled out to millions of customers across the world. You will get to build on top of Amazon’s vast development infrastructure, including AWS as well as internal tools for setting up continuous deployment and real-time monitoring.

The ideal candidate will be excited to lead Rekognition’s Data Engineering team, which is responsible for sourcing and creating the large amounts of targeted data required to train our AI models, and for training improved models and making them ready for production. You are interested in statistical analysis, UX design, software design, big data, machine learning, and coaching and developing your team. You enjoy working closely with experts across a range of disciplines, including engineering, science, and product development.

Basic Qualifications

  • BS/MS in Computer Science or equivalent
  • 5+ years of industry experience
  • 3+ years of management experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Programming in Python, Java, C and/or C++ in a Linux environment.
  • Experience building scalable infrastructure software for commercial online services.
  • Experience with storage, filesystems, virtualization technologies and on-demand computing.
  • Experience with machine learning / computer vision
  • Experience managing external vendors and teams
  • An interest in UX and human factors
  • Experience in iteratively optimizing processes and UIs
