Job Description

Amazon Fulfillment Technology (AFT) is looking for a Manager of software development to lead our Item Intelligence Team. AFT powers the physical engine at the heart of Amazon by building the software, hardware, and processes that run Amazon's global network of fulfillment centers that power Amazon.com. They move billions of units of inventory, employ tens of thousands of people, and ensure that customers get what they want when promised. We do this by building automated solutions to handle things that technology does well, while relying on people to handle things that humans do well.

The Item Intelligence software development team own systems to capture, validate, aggregate and analyze measurement data related to the physical products inside Amazon Fulfillment centers. We are the authoritative source for information needed to correctly store, handle and ship billions of units of inventory worldwide. The Item Intelligence systems integrate with diverse hardware sensors to aggregate basic physical attributes such as weight and dimensions, and to derive complex attributes such as 3d scan or hull volume. The team drives automation projects to transform how measurements are done at Amazon scale. Machine-learning techniques are used to predict attributes when items are not physically available.

As Software Development Manager, you will be responsible for driving the technical direction and architecture of this large, complex software system. You will manage a team of software engineers and develop business impacting services that are at the core of Amazon's fulfillment engine. You will also work closely with a diverse group of stakeholders from internal business and technical teams to define business opportunities and then drive end-to-end solutions. You will be empowered to think big, invent on behalf of our customers, independently make judgment calls to keep teams moving and to find elegant solutions to hard problems.

Basic Qualifications

We are looking for an experienced people manager with a track record of having built or launched complex software systems.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, or an equivalent field. Or, equivalent work experience.
  • 6+ years of experience building production software systems, including 3+ years of people-management experience.
  • A track record of building and successfully launching complex software systems.
  • Track record of developing engineers through various career stages and building high-performance teams.
  • Experienced in using an iterative process such as SCRUM to deliver engineering projects; experience in continuous improvement to development process.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Interest and passion in learning about Metrology and Machine Learning concepts and techniques that are used on the team.
