Job Description

Amazon Fulfillment Technologies (AFT) is seeking an inventive, results-oriented software leader for our Inventory Services group. AFT powers the physical engine at the heart of Amazon by building the software, hardware, and processes that run a global network of fulfillment centers that move billions of units of inventory, employ tens of thousands of people, and ensure that customers get what they want when promised. We do this by building automated solutions to handle things that technology does well, while relying on people to handle things that humans do well.

The inventory management system is the authoritative source of information for billions of inventory units that Amazon holds in its Fulfillment Centers (FC) worldwide. The system monitors for discrepancies between virtual and physical states to measure the quality of our data and decisions. Costs associated with inventory transactions are automatically managed by the system to enable Amazon to account for owned assets in real time. The complexity of the system is compounded by rapidly increasing selection, growing customer adoption of online shopping, and the need to support innovative fulfillment approaches.

You will be responsible for driving the technical direction and architecture of this large, complex software system. You will manage a team of software engineers to develop highly available, business impacting services at the core of Amazon's fulfillment engine. You will also work closely with a diverse group of stakeholders from World-wide Operations, Finance, Fulfilled-By-Amazon, and internal technical teams to define business opportunities and then drive end-to-end solutions.

Providing a scalable system to support Amazon’s expanding business is a complex architectural challenge, and accurate inventory information is a critical piece. Every activity in an FC requires access to inventory data. While write operations need ACID properties, fast aggregated read access to changing inventory states is required for various applications. Sharing and transforming these data sets is a problem that has eclipsed classical relational database technology.

You will be empowered to think big, invent on behalf of our customers, independently make judgment calls to keep teams moving and find elegant solutions to hard problems. You will directly own the architecture, engineering quality and technical roadmap of the Inventory Services group. Successful candidates will have an established track record delivering complex software systems, excellent people and project management skills, keen technical aptitude, solid communication skills, and be driven to achieve results in a fast paced environment.

Basic Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Computer Science or related discipline with 5+ years of experience; or Bachelor’s Degree with 7+ years of experience.
  • 3+ years of experience leading a software development team through multiple product/platform releases.
  • 4+ years of experience making significant individual contribution to real-world software development.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with an object-oriented programming language; strong object-oriented design and algorithmic analysis background.
  • Able to independently operate and lead through ambiguous in fast paced environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a proven ability to present complex technical information in a clear and concise manner to a variety of audiences.
