Job Description

The Alexa Voice Services (AVS) team is looking for a systems development engineer with strong technical skills, problem solving abilities, deep customer affinity and communication skills, to join our Customer Experience Operations (CXO) team. We're looking for a Systems Engineer to work closely with our Development community to build our highly stable and scalable next-gen systems and join our energetic, hard-driving, and passionate team . AVS CXO takes customer impacting problems and drives them to a solution; building reproduction cases, demonstrating impacts to owning teams, developing monitoring or other tests to validate improved functionality or notifications - whatever it takes to continually improve the experience of AVSs customers worldwide. We have high standards for our computer systems as well as our employees: our systems are highly reliable, highly available, and turn scale into an advantage for our business and an asset to our customers; our employees are super smart, driven to serve customers, and fun to work with. The successful candidate will drive much more than tracked changes and managing a ticket queue. The team will be instrumental in scaling a massive always-on distributed system that is part of an entirely new software development approach; the ideal person in this role will be empower to think multiple steps ahead to build systems that detect and mitigate customer experience challenges we have not yet encountered. More specifically; ideal candidates should do, be, or have experience with most of the following:

- Background driving operational excellence in a highly-available SOA environment
- Automating deployment and administration of hosts through scripting and/or open source tools
- Strong debugging and systems analysis skills around identification and rapid issue resolution
- Ownership and leadership skills to coordinate projects across multiple teams and drive them to successful conclusion
- Design and/or support of a high-availability Linux and Java-based SOA system
- Proficiency in building and managing large-scale monitoring platforms and solutions
- Deep customer empathy and demonstrated ownership of customer-facing issue resolution
- Evaluating that systems architectures meet Tier 0 operational excellence standards for availability, security, and reliability

Basic Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience
  • Understanding of the UNIX/Linux/Windows operating system
  • Experience with a 24/7 production environment
  • 5+ years of overall software development/technical operations experience
  • Programming experience in Java and Python on a Unix/Linux platform
  • Understanding of XML/SOAP, REST, web services, workflow modeling, web application development

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrable expertise around specifying, designing, and/or implementing system health, performance monitoring tools, and software management tools for 24x7 environments
  • A solid grasp of networking fundamentals, preferably including hands-on experience with load balancers, switches, routers, etc.
  • Familiar with the challenges surrounding efficient operations and failure mode analysis in large complex distributed systems
  • Computer Science fundamentals in data structures, algorithm design and problem solving
  • Experience developing distributed systems and web services
  • Experience building Java applications and agile software development practices
  • A high degree of organization and be very detail-oriented.
  • Excellent leadership, verbal, and written communication skills.
