The Role:

As a Principal Wireless System Architect, the candidate will define system architecture of the wireless connectivity subsystem for wireless consumer electronics devices, including vendor and chipset selection for WiFi, Bluetooth (BT) and other radio technologies. The candidate will translate business requirements related to the wireless connectivity subsystem into connectivity use cases and tangible technical specifications. The candidate will work closely with internal cross-functional teams including product managers, system architects, software architects, hardware and software design engineers, test engineers and engineering management. The candidate must be able to succeed within an open collaborative peer environment. The day-to-day responsibilities include:

  • Perform communication system analysis across available technologies and connectivity solutions to specify optimal system architecture with regards to cost and performance
  • Analyze and evaluate new radio technologies and wireless connectivity solutions
  • Drive vendor engagement related to system architecture design with their wireless connectivity solutions and evaluation of their data-sheet specifications
  • Work closely with internal cross-functional teams, such as system architecture, RF systems, wireless FW, wireless SW, concept engineering and product management
  • Regularly review published research articles on current and future wireless technologies that are of interest to Amazon
  • Attend standards meetings and influence development of the new wireless standards
  • Debug and perform analysis of existing Amazon products in collaboration with other wireless teams

Basic Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or related field with 7+ years (or BS with 10+ years) of experience in system design of wireless communication systems, especially in WLAN radio technologies
  • Experience with PHY and MAC layer of 802.11 standard
  • Experience with RF circuits and components
  • 5+ years of experience in developing and delivering a wireless sub-system into consumer electronics products
  • Experience in Hardware design of wireless communication links using either third-party components or FPGA and SDR platforms
  • Experience in evaluation and over-the-air testing of existing wireless connectivity platforms
  • Experience in technical document writing using Visio, Word, Excel, and / or PowerPoint

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters degree with 7+ years of experience in system design of wireless communication systems, especially in WLAN radio technologies
  • A good understanding of design of OFDM communication systems
  • Software modeling of wireless communication systems
  • Familiarity with embedded software development and debugging: GNU/Linux device drivers, firmware, IDE (ex: Eclipse, Visual Studio)
  • Experience with the upper-layer (above MAC) 802.11 stack
  • Hands-on experience with RF system design
  • 2-5 years of DFx (Design for cost, test, manufacturing) expertise
  • 2-5 years of schematic capture with tool sets such as OrCAD; overseeing and reviewing PCB layout in Allegro or equivalent
  • Experience working as a Technical Lead
  • Experience with operating hardware lab equipment such as digital oscilloscope, signal analyzer, network analyzer, call boxes and soldering
  • Revision control and document control
