Systems Development Engineer - AWS Database Services

This is an excellent opportunity to join Amazon's world class technical team in either Seattle, WA or Herndon, VA, working with some of the best and brightest engineers and technical managers while also developing your skills and furthering your career within one of the most innovative and progressive technology companies anywhere.

Amazon Web Service is building some of the largest distributed systems in the world. Amazon's database offerings like Aurora, DynamoDB, ElastiCache, EMR, RDS, and Redshift are massively scaled services that make up a critical piece of the internet today.

A successful Engineer joining the team will do much more than write code and triage problems. They will work with Amazon's largest and most demanding customers to address specific needs across a full suite of services. They will dive deep into technical issues and work relentlessly to improve the customer experience. The ideal candidate will:

Have strong Linux & Networking Fu. The ideal candidate will have deep experience working with Linux, preferably in a large scale, distributed environment. You understand networking technology and how servers and networks inter-relate. You regularly take part in deep-dive troubleshooting and conduct technical post-mortem discussions to identify the root cause of complex issues.

Love to code. Whether its building tools in Java or solving complex system problems in Python, the ideal candidate will love using technology to solve problems. You have a solid understanding of software development methodology and know how to use the right tool for the right job.

Think Big. The ideal candidate will build and deploy solutions across thousands of devices. You will strive to improve and streamline processes to allow for work on a massive scale.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree in Computer Science or a related field, or relevant work experience
  • Solid understanding of the Linux Operating System
  • 2+ years plus of distributed system management experience
  • 1+ year(s) developing system management / automation software in Perl, Python, Ruby, or Java

Applicants must possess and maintain an active Top Secret security clearance (TS) with SCI eligibility. A US Government administered polygraph examination may be required. Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) access is not required to start; however, the applicant selected will be subject to a Single-Scope Background Investigation (SSBI) and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified national security information. Applicants with a current SSBI, SBPR, or PPR, may be eligible for crossover in accordance with ICPG 704.4.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in Computer Science or an Engineering discipline
  • Experience operating large scale systems
  • Solid grasp of networking fundamentals
  • Experience in a 24/7 production environment
  • Knowledge of databases like MySQL, Oracle, SQLServer, or MongoDB
  • Strong ownership, urgency, and drive to launch and maintain services
  • Passion for providing a great customer experience
  • Proficiency in design and analysis of algorithms and data structures
  • Ability to work in a fast paced and agile development environment
  • Excellent communication, prioritization, and analytical skills
