Job Description

Do you want to work hard, have fun, and make history? Do you have a passion for Software Development and Machine Learning? Amazon Web Services (AWS), a leader in cloud computing, is looking for a talented Applied Scientist to help revolutionize the way we sell to and serve customers using big data and analytics. In this role, you will join a team of Data Scientists, Business Analyst and Software Developers building and putting into production the next generation of predictive models and tools aimed at helping customers succeed.

Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Conducts data analyses with the appropriate statistical approach (regressions, linear and non-linear correlation, entropy, t-test, F-test, etc.)
  • Identifies the needed data, their underlying structure (distribution, variable independence, outliers, etc.), and treatment of missing value
  • Recognizes the need of using Feature Selection techniques (correlation, high-dimensionality, over-fitting, etc.), and is knowledgeable of the state of the art on this field
  • Is an expert in ML. S/he is not satisfied by using a “ML package”, but wants to understand the reason why a model would or would not work for a given data set and business problem
  • Would be comfortable if an MVP has to be delivered (and not the “perfect model”) and is able to create a model that satisfies the business needs even though it implies a non-optimal theoretical “accuracy” of the model
  • Partners with engineering to productionize end-to-end model training and prediction workflows
  • Builds highly scalable and efficient tools for modeling tasks
  • Understands business goal and metrics to be optimized, and maps them to scientific goals and metrics
  • Reports status of project progress in timely and accurate fashion, using available metrics and evaluates technical risks
  • Diagnoses root cause of complex model performance problems
  • Collaborate with internal resources to gather, curate and build data sets needed to successfully construct the targeting mechanism and evolve the program for continuous improvement.

Basic Qualifications

To be successful in this role, we are looking for someone with:
  • At least MSc. (PhD preferred) degree in Maths, Applied Maths, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field
  • Experience leveraging Software Development and Machine Learning
  • 3+ years in Advanced Analytics (AI, Graph Theory, Numerical Analysis, etc.)
  • Strong mathematical background
  • Proficient with mathematical programming libraries (R, Matlab, Python)
  • Experience using complex data structures and algorithms

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field
  • Big thinker that can take broad visions and concepts and develop structured plans, actions and measureable metrics and then execute those plans.
  • Excellent communications skills including, presenting, editing, and writing as well as accuracy and attention to detail required.
  • A fast-thinking, high-energy individual who can demonstrate a “find a way to win” attitude and sense of humor while working with a wide range of personalities will thrive in this role.
  • Experience evaluating and making decisions around the use of new or existing tools for a project
  • Ability to make the right trade-offs between schedule, resources and scope in order to deliver on a project
