Job Description

We are looking for a smart and passionate person to join our Browse Taxonomy Team as a Sr. Taxonomist. This person will help build and develop an intuitive and comprehensive navigation structure to optimize product discovery when searching and browsing on our site. In this role, you will have the opportunity to directly and significantly impact the customer experience by making it easy and fun to shop for products on Amazon.com. As a Sr. Taxonomist, you will have the opportunity to participate in designing and building global strategies and standards for Amazon’s product Taxonomy and work on developing our next generation of product categorization.

RESPONSIBILITIES
• Develop taxonomy and ontology data models and standards to define and organize our customer shopping experience
• Mentor and influence peers
• Advise business partners, technical teams and leadership on taxonomy and metadata solutions to aid in improving customer product discovery
• Expand and refine data retrieval techniques to use our extensive product catalog and to improve customer data quality
• Develop team operational excellence programs, data quality initiatives and process simplifications
• Contribute to team goal setting and future state vision
• Drive and coordinate cross-functional projects with a broad range of merchandisers, engineers, designers, and other groups that may include architecting new data solutions
• Own business requirements related to taxonomy tools, metrics and or process improvements

Basic Qualifications

• Master's degree in Library or Information Science (or similar discipline); equivalent professional experience may be substituted
• 5+ years relevant work experience
• Demonstrated professional knowledge of controlled vocabularies, classification, ontology and taxonomy
• Proven taxonomy design judgement with the ability to translate business use cases into good taxonomy design
• Experience in data retrieval systems
• Demonstrated project management skills with experience in leading large team projects, new process initiatives or otherwise architecting new metadata solutions
• Passionate about website usability with great instincts for improving customer shopping experience

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in E-Commerce or Technology organizations preferred
• Proven ability to work and deliver effectively in cross-functional teams
• Great verbal communication skills with the ability to present complex technical and metadata information in a clear and concise manner to a variety of technical and non-technical audiences
• Technically strong; fluency in Unix-based systems and programming skills a plus
