Job Description

Amazon Mechanical Turk is a service that provides access to an on-demand, scalable, workforce to complete jobs that humans can do better than computers. Common use cases include image recognition, audio transcription, machine learning algorithm training, sentiment analysis, data normalization, and surveys. At any given time, there are hundreds of thousands of jobs (called Human Intelligence Tasks, or “HITs”) available in the system. Mechanical Turk is seeking a Manager of Software Development.

As a leader on the team, the Manager of Software Development will be expected to operate at all levels, diving deep into the details while providing strategic inputs for the product. You will be a key player in driving strategic planning, project execution, development of engineering talent, and the ongoing operation and improvement of the product. This is your opportunity to make a big impact on the satisfaction of our customers and the performance of our business.

This role involves leading a nimble team of software engineers and junior managers to architect, develop, test and deploy high quality software solutions. You will manage and execute against project plans and delivery commitments. On a day-to-day basis, you will manage the activities of the engineering team within an Agile/Scrum environment. You will be expected to build and maintain inter-team relationships on your team’s behalf, and be an evangelist and point of contact for your team.

The ideal candidate will have an established background building and managing large-scale systems, great communication skills, a proven track record of building best-in-class engineering teams, and the ability to deliver in a fast paced environment. You are passionate about simple and elegant software solutions, customer-centric products, and building a team and product from scratch.

You thrive on tackling very hard problems; have great problem-solving skills and many years of hands-on software development skills. You are an excellent communicator, both verbal and written, and equally adept at communicating upwards and downwards. You are curious, love to dive deep, collect data to make well-informed decisions, but use sound judgment in the face of insufficient data. You are abreast of the latest technology developments and push your teams to innovate. You have strong leadership qualities, and a track record of delivering great solutions.

If you are excited by the opportunity to lead a high performing engineering team in the design and development of highly scalable web services and systems, this may be the right career move for you. We operate as a startup within Amazon, providing great flexibility in product and technology direction.
